Throbb
Throbb
Throbb is Goth’s companion from the hot jungle in South America that was captured to be studied.
He is always hungry and is always craving bat meat. He whines and complains and always takes orders and does what Goth says.
He is a bit on the dumb side of things.
He also worships and prays to Cama Zotz but he is not from the royal family and is not a prince like Goth.
Marina
Marina
Marina is the bat that Shade meets on an Island after he gets lost in the storm, away from his colony.
Marina is a Brightwing bat, she has a silver band around her wing, and her family sent her away because of it. They believe that it will bring bad luck to the Brightwing colony. So she went away to live on a small Island. But according to the Chief elder of the Silverwing colony, Frieda she believes that the Silver bands are a promise that their goddess, Nocturna will free them from the darkness and that they will be able to see the sun again.
Some characteristics of Marina:
1. She determined, but sensitive of the fact that her family pushed her away.
2. She is a bit of a know-it-all
Frieda
Frieda
Frieda is the oldest bat and chief elder of the Silverwing colony. She is also the wisest and has experienced a lot and has even seen the sun! She shows Shade the echo chamber down at the bottom of Tree Haven. She also stood up for Shade when the owls come to burn down Tree Haven. (Because he has broken the law by going out and seeing the sun and the owls were mad since they didn’t catch Shade so they were coming for revenge.)
Bathsheba
Bathsheba
Bathsheba is the second in command to Frieda being chief elder. Bathsheba has ambitions of her own to throw Frieda off her command so she can become the highest. When Frieda stands up for Shade when the owls come, Bathsheba insists that they take Shade. She tells Shade’s mother Ariel that she should have left shade to be eaten in the first place instead of causing the colony all this grief.
She is usually grumpy and angry with the colony and the choices Frieda makes.
Goth
GOTH
In the novel, Goth and his companion Throbb come from the jungles in South America but were taken from their home to be studied in a lab.
Goth is a vampyrum spectrum also known as a false vampire bat. He is a cannibal of his own kind and is the evil character in the novel. He like to look up to his colony’s god, the evil, Cama Zotz, to which he prays to and worships.
He plans to escape from the false jungle in the laboratory to return home and become the king of his kind. When he escapes and realizes he is far from home, he and throbb meet up with the lost shade and marina who are also trying to find shade’s colony and they persuade them that they are nice and can protect shade and marina from owls and other creatures.
After Shade and Marina help them find their way home, Goth plans to eat both of them. Also, Goth often thinks about eating his companion Throbb, but decides not to because he might need Throbb sometime soon for something else. the top of their order in the food chain, that is, without predators, and feed on birds,
Vampyrum Spectrum, also known as false vampire bats, are native to South & Central America and are the largest bat found in the Neotropics. Their dense woolly fur ranges from dark or chestnut brown to rust in colour and their ears and nose are very long. The Vampyrum Spectrum can have a wingspan of up to 1 meter.False Vampire bats are generally the top of their order in the food chain, that is, without predators, and feed on birds, smaller varieties of bat, and rodents. They are called false vampires because it was once thought that they fed on blood rather than meat.
Vampyrum Spectrum are usually found in lowland, evergreen forest, occasionally in cloud or deciduous forests, fruit groves, pastures or swampy areas. They nest in groups of up to five individuals in hollow trees often near water.

Chinook
Chinook
Chinook is also part of the Silverwing colony; he is one of the newborns and one of the biggest and strongest. He likes to make fun of Shade about how he is the runt of the colony. He has a friend named Jared who is like a sidekick to him. But later on in the novel, when Shade dares Chinook to look at the sun, he later backs out because he does not want to get in trouble and he does not think it is a good idea. So Shade does it by himself to prove to Chinook that he is not a helpless bat.
At the end if the novel Chinook respects Shade for all the heroic things he has done.
Ariel
Ariel
Ariel is a Silverwing bat and the mother of Shade. Her husband, Cassiel went missing while he was searching for the secret of the bands, but then the owls got him according to one of the elders, Icarus.
Ariel is protective and makes sure Shade stays out of trouble. She is also very kind and wise.
Shade
Shade
Shade, which is the main character in the novel is the son of Ariel and Cassiel Silverwing, and is the runt of his colony is often picked on by the other newborns for being small and helpless. He is determined to prove to everyone he can do something and be strong so he challenges the biggest and strongest newborn, Chinook who picks on him the most to see the sun.
The law is that bats are not allowed to be out when the sun rises and if they are seen doing so, they will be eaten.
The law is this way because billions of years before there was a great battle between the birds and beasts and the bats would not take sides, so they were banished to the darkness.
While flying to Hibernaculum to hibernate, shade is struggling to keep up and gets lost in a storm and separated from his colony. He meets up with a Brightwing bat named Marina and it becomes a struggle for survival for the two bats.
